Thrive Awards 2024

Sydney Adventist Hospital’s annual Thrive Awards were held on the 21st of November.

The event honours staff members across various departments for their dedication, excellence in care, and commitment to the hospital's mission of providing high-quality healthcare to the those they care for.

“Our Annual Thrive Awards are a celebration of the wonderful contributions and achievements of our People. They include the Care, Service & People Leadership Excellence Awards, Mission Ambassador of the Year, our San Foundation Ambassador, Quality, Research and AMO Awards,” said Brett Goods AHCL CEO. 

The first awards of the night were the San Foundation Ambassador category with Dr Jason Sharp and Adam Rennie the recipients of this gong. 

 

“These remarkable individuals have championed San Foundation at every opportunity, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing support,” said Judy Tanna, San Foundation Managing Director. 

AMO Awards 

The AMO Awards are our way of formally recognising the exceptional contributions of our accredited doctors. 

This year there were over 60 nominations from staff, peers and colleagues right across the organisation – a tribute to how highly regarded the esteemed San doctors are by those they work with.

Doctor in Training Award 

This award recognises the work of a San doctor who is undergoing training in an intern, resident or registrar role, has demonstrated high standards of professional and clinical excellence, gaining the respect of the hospital team and their peers and reflects the holistic values of the hospital about caring for the whole person, ‘mind, body and spirit’.

This year the winner of the Doctor in Training Award is Dr Hugh House.

 

Academic Award 

The academic award recognises the work of a San Doctor who has taken a leadership role in managing and innovating within a specialised field of medicine and shown dedication to research and/or educating others about advances in this area of pursuit.

The 2024 Academic Award went to Professor Gavin Marx, Director of the San’s Integrated Cancer Centre

Community Service Award 

This award recognises the work of a San Doctor who has demonstrated altruism, compassion, integrity, and leadership while providing quality health care and services to those in greatest need, either locally or more broadly. They have made significant contributions through outreach clinical work, healthcare philanthropy or other healthcare services to the public. It recognises someone who has taken an educative and mentorship role in adding value to the health knowledge of practitioners, patients and the broader community, and; reflects the holistic values of the hospital about caring for the whole person, ‘body, mind and spirit’. 

The recipient of the Community Service Award for 2024 is Dr Amy McLean

San Doctor Award 

The San Doctor Award recognises the work of a doctor who exemplifies the mission and the wholistic values of the hospital about caring for the whole person, ‘mind, body and spirit’; and has made an outstanding medical contribution and through their conduct demonstrates true leadership and clinical excellence, gaining the respect of the hospital team, their peers and community. 

The winner of the San Doctor of the Year for 2024 is Dr Andrew Booker

Quality Awards 

Hand Hygiene Award 

Managed by the Infection Prevention and Control department, this award was introduced to encourage personnel and departments to comply with the requirement of the National Hand Hygiene Initiative.

The Renal Dialysis Unit were awarded the trophy this year. 

Quality Award Clinical 

The award recognises staff who have submitted projects directly relating to clinical changes in practice.  

This year the award was given to San Rehab for Time To Care

Co-Clinical Award


This award recognises the importance of continued quality improvement in areas which are non-clinical. It supports innovation by staff to solve problems or improve processes. 

The winner was San Radiology and Nuclear Medicine for Establishment of the Robert & Jeanne Szeto PET-CT Centre.

Quality Award Over All Excellence  

This is the highest award presented each year and is chosen from submissions across both categories.  

This year Operating Theatres was the award recipient for Robotic Inguinal Hernia Surgery – A prospective Case Series .

Nursing Excellence Awards 

These awards recognise up to 4 team members who are models of excellence in nursing care and professional practice. 

There were so many compassionate, skilled and dedicated people nominated in this category, but the winners were:

·         Rachael Driscoll, Clinical Nurse Educator 

·         Emily Stephenson, Nursing Unit Manager Gee Ward 

·         Diah Alabdan, Clinical Nurse Specialist Knight Ward 

·         Grant Taylor, Registered Nurse Radiology Pharmacy & Radiology

Excellence in Care Awards: Allied Health

This Care Excellence award recognises a non-nursing team member working in Allied, Radiology and Pharmacy roles who are models of excellence in care and professional practice.

The winner of this category for 2024 is Natalie Saliba, from Pharmacy Clinical.

 Service Excellence Award  

An impressive number of team members were nominated by their peers for the Service Excellence Award, and Rebecca Palisi from San Rehab was ultimately named winner.  The award recognises Rebecca’s can-do attitude and willingness to assist nurses and other staff.  

People Leadership Excellence Award   

The People Leadership Excellence Award was introduced last year and recognises an AHCL People Leader who is a model of outstanding people leadership.  

Julian Kueh, Theatre Manager took out the category. His team say he displays excellent managerial attributes including being a good listener, having empathy, integrity, compassion and kindness. He maintains a calm manner and always has time for all staff, all whilst managing a complex and busy department.

Mission Ambassador of the Year  

The Mission Ambassador program recognises and encourages employees who are living examples of our Mission, Christianity in Action – caring for the body, mind and spirit of our Patients, Colleagues, Community and Self.

Monika Clague, from San Volunteers was selected as 2024 Mission Ambassador. Adventist HealthCare’s mission is Christianity in Action - serving others through words and actions regardless of your role, whilst leading by example; values which Monika embodies. 

A huge congratulations to everyone who received an Award. Together, the combined efforts of doctors, nurses and hospital staff will make a lasting impact on healthcare and the well-being of our community.
